Artist’s Statement:
This piece was inspired by a patient, who was a retired ballet dancer with Alzheimer's. When her family played Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake theme, it had reawakened gestures from her dance, demonstrating how movement and sound remained intertwined in her memory and identity as an artist. In this piece, the dancer is positioned in what is known as the “dying swan pose.” Her silhouette resembles the shape of a neuron with her tutu as the soma and her limbs as the dendrites and axon. A cluster of beta-amyloid plaque, however, interferes and blocks further branching.
