Anatomical Ceramics

by Vivien Holop

Artist’s Statement:

These ceramic forms reinterpret anatomical structures as objects of care rather than instruction. By removing them from their clinical context, they become vulnerable and tactile forms.

My surface work aims to capture both medical illustrations and organic decay, emphasizing the never-ending tension between precision and fragility. They encourage the audience to consider the intimacy of the human body, while inviting viewers to contemplate how understanding and handling it can become both reverence and intrusion.

By presenting these organs as sculptures rather than diagrams, they challenge the neutrality often associated with the dissection of human bodies and anatomical knowledge, to question how empathy survives when the body is fragmented for knowledge.
